What we take

One laptop or a boxful

We buy used and old laptops from businesses and from individuals — a single old laptop that has been in a drawer since it was replaced, or fifty from an office refresh. Slow, cracked, missing a charger or refusing to turn on at all — none of that rules a machine out, it only changes what it is worth.

Business laptops

Dell Latitude and Precision, HP EliteBook and ProBook, Lenovo ThinkPad — the machines that come off a refresh cycle in tens or hundreds.

Consumer and home laptops

Whatever has been sitting in the cupboard since it was replaced, including budget machines and all-in-ones.

MacBooks

MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, Intel or Apple silicon, including units with battery or screen faults.

Gaming and high-specification

Discrete graphics and mobile workstations. These tend to hold their value longer than an equivalent office machine.

Why we do not publish a price list

Because the same model in two different conditions is worth two different amounts, and a number on a page that changes the moment the laptop arrives helps nobody.

What we can do is tell you what moves the figure and then work yours out properly. How much is my laptop worth goes through specification, age, condition and demand in turn, and asks the handful of questions that actually change the answer.

Four things worth doing first

None of these take long, and the last two are the ones people get wrong most often.

Back up anything you want to keep

Photographs, documents, anything still only on that machine. Once a drive is wiped it is gone, which is the point of wiping it — so copy off what matters first.

Sign out and unlock it

Remove the laptop from your Apple, Microsoft or Google account and turn off any activation lock or device management. Wiping the drive does not clear them, and one that reaches us still locked cannot be checked or resold until you release it.

Send the charger with it

The charger most of all — a laptop that arrives without one has to be tested with a substitute before anything can be confirmed. Original boxes and docking stations are worth mentioning too, and anything missing simply comes off the figure rather than causing a problem.

Leave the drive in it

Taking the drive out to be safe is understandable, but a laptop with no drive is worth less than the same laptop with the drive wiped. If the data is the worry, say so and we can deal with it.

What kind of laptops do you buy?

Any make and any age — Dell, HP, Lenovo, Apple, Asus, Acer, MSI and the rest, from business fleets to a single machine that has been in a drawer for two years. Gaming laptops and mobile workstations are worth listing too, as high-specification machines tend to hold their value better than the average.

Will you buy it if it does not work?

Yes. A machine that will not start may have nothing worse than a flat battery or a failed charger, and where a repair is not economic there is frequently still value in the parts. More on selling a broken laptop.

Do I have to pay to send it?

No. Postage is free for laptops — for a single machine or a few, sending them in to us is usually the simplest route. Where there is enough to justify the journey we can collect instead, and that is free too. Tell us what you have and where you are and we will confirm which makes more sense before anything is arranged.

How quickly will I be paid?

The price is agreed with you before anything moves, from what you tell us about the laptop. Where we collect, the collector checks it matches your description and pays the agreed price at the time of collection. Where you send it in, we pay the agreed price on the working day it reaches us. If the laptop is materially different from the description we come back to you with what we found before anything is paid or changed.

How many laptops do I need to have?

One is fine. Larger quantities are what we are set up for and are quicker for us to process, but a single machine is still worth asking about — we will tell you plainly whether it is worth doing.

Do I have to accept the quote?

No. A quote costs you nothing and you are free to decline the figure — nothing is committed until you say yes. Ask about a laptop you are only half thinking of selling; that is what the quote is for.

What happens to my laptop afterwards?

If there is useful life left it is cleaned, tested and resold so it goes back into service. If there is not, the working components are recovered to keep other machines running. Recycling is the last resort rather than the first. What happens to your equipment.
