This is the one page on the site where a single component decides most of the figure. Everything else is a modifier.

The graphics card, first and last

On a gaming laptop the GPU is most of what you are selling. Generation matters more than the number on the badge — and whether it is the full-power version or a lower-wattage variant of the same chip makes a real difference, because manufacturers fit both under the same name.

Screen and refresh rate

A high-refresh panel is part of what makes the machine a gaming laptop rather than a laptop with a good graphics card. Resolution, refresh rate and whether it supports variable refresh are all worth stating.

Thermal condition

These machines run hot and live hard. If it throttles, whistles, or the fans have been replaced or repasted, say so — it is normal wear on this type of hardware rather than something that ends the conversation.

What you have upgraded

Extra memory and a bigger drive fitted after purchase both count, and gaming laptops are among the few that owners genuinely do upgrade. Mention it rather than assuming we will find it.

Which brands do you take?

All of them — ASUS ROG and TUF, Alienware and Dell G-series, MSI, Razer, Lenovo Legion, Acer Predator and Nitro, HP Omen. The badge matters far less than the specification inside, which is the opposite of how it works with business laptops.

Do gaming laptops hold their value?

Less well than business machines, proportionally, because each new GPU generation moves the goalposts and the previous one drops. But they start from a much higher price, so a three-year-old gaming laptop is frequently still worth more in absolute terms than a three-year-old office machine. Both things are true at once and people usually only expect one of them.

The fans are loud and it gets hot. Does that matter?

Mention it, but do not assume it is fatal. Dust, aged thermal paste and tired fans are routine on hardware that has been run hard, and are often economic to put right on a machine that is otherwise sought after. What matters more is whether it is stable under load.

I have taken the RAM and SSD out. Is that a problem?

It costs you. A machine missing its memory and storage is worth less than the same machine complete, because whoever buys it has to source both. If the drive is out because of what was on it, that is a data worry we can deal with instead — have it wiped and leave the machine complete.

It has a cracked screen but plays fine on an external monitor.

Still very much worth selling. On a machine where the graphics card carries the value, a broken panel is a cheaper problem than it looks. Selling a broken laptop covers faults generally.
