Find the Service Tag

Dell gives every machine a seven-character code that identifies exactly what it is. Quote it and you will get a far better first figure than “a Dell, about five years old” — which is genuinely most of what we are sent.

On the underside

A small label, usually near the hinge or under the stand.

In the BIOS

Tap F2 as it starts. It is shown on the first screen.

In Windows

Run 'wmic bios get serialnumber' at a command prompt.

The ranges

Which Dell you have matters more than the year

Dell’s ranges sit a long way apart on value, and two machines of the same age from different lines are not remotely worth the same.

Latitude: The business workhorse, and the range we see most. Built for fleets, well supported, and holds value further into its life than most consumer machines of the same age.
Precision: Mobile workstations with professional graphics. Often the most valuable Dell laptops second-hand, particularly the higher-specification configurations.
XPS: The premium consumer line. Good screens and build, and the models with discrete graphics or high-resolution panels do noticeably better than the base configurations.
Inspiron and Vostro: Budget and small-business ranges. Worth asking about, but be prepared for a lower figure — these were built to a price when new and that follows them.

Send the charger, and the dock if there is one. Both carry value and both are routinely forgotten.

What is the Service Tag and where do I find it?

A seven-character code unique to your machine, printed on a label on the underside and shown in the BIOS. It identifies the exact configuration the laptop shipped with — processor, memory, storage, screen and graphics — which means we can price it properly without you having to work any of that out. If you send us nothing else, send the Service Tag.

The BIOS is password protected. Is it still worth anything?

Tell us, because it matters. A BIOS or hard drive password set by a previous IT department can lock a machine down in ways that are awkward to clear, and on some models it materially affects what the laptop is worth. It does not make it worthless, but it is far better raised at enquiry stage than discovered on arrival.

Do you want the dock and the charger?

Yes to both. Dell docks — the WD, TB and E-Port families — have real value of their own and are frequently left behind on a desk when the laptop is sent. The charger matters too, and Dell laptops are fussy about wattage, so the original one is worth more than a generic replacement.

We are retiring a fleet of Latitudes. Is that different?

It is easier, and consistency is reflected in the offer — forty identical machines are far quicker to test and process than forty different ones. Export what you have from your asset register, Service Tags included if possible. IT asset disposal covers how that runs, including the data side.

It is an old Dell that will not turn on. Worth sending?

Worth asking about. A machine that will not start often has nothing worse than a flat battery or a failed charger, and Dell parts are widely available so repairs are more often economic than on some brands. Selling a broken laptop.
