The thing to know

HP business and HP consumer are different worlds

More than with most brands, the range name decides what an HP laptop is worth. Two machines the same age, bought the same year, can sit a long way apart — and HP’s naming does not make that obvious if you just know you own an HP.

Business ranges

EliteBook

HP's flagship business range. Metal chassis, long support life and the machines most likely to be worth a sensible figure years after they left the office.

ProBook

The mid-tier business line. Not quite an EliteBook, considerably better than the consumer ranges, and extremely common in fleet clear-outs.

ZBook

Mobile workstations with professional graphics. Often the most valuable HP laptops on the second-hand market, especially the higher configurations.

Consumer ranges

Pavilion, Envy, Omen and Stream

The consumer lines, sold through retailers. Still worth asking about — an Omen with a discrete graphics card is a gaming machine and priced as one — but the plastic-bodied Pavilions and Streams sit at the bottom of the range and it is fairer to say so than to let you expect otherwise.

How do I tell which HP I have?

The range name is usually printed on the bezel or the underside, but the more useful identifier is the product number — a code like 1A2B3C#ABU on the service label underneath. It pins down the exact configuration, where the model name alone can cover a dozen different specifications.

There is a BIOS password on it from our old IT company.

Say so at enquiry stage. HP’s business machines can carry BIOS passwords and DriveLock on the storage, and those are deliberately difficult to clear — that is the point of them. It affects what the machine is worth and occasionally whether it can be resold at all, so it is much better raised early than found on arrival.

Is the docking station worth including?

Yes. HP’s USB-C and Thunderbolt docks, and the older UltraSlim range, carry value of their own and are frequently left on the desk when the laptop is boxed up. The same goes for the charger — HP uses several different connectors and wattages, so the original one is worth more than a generic.

Send the whole list rather than trying to sort it first. Mixed batches are normal, and working out which machines carry the value is our job. IT asset disposal covers larger clear-outs including the data side.

Ex-corporate machine? Check it has been released from any device management before you send it. A laptop still enrolled can be unusable to anyone else.
