What is inside decides the figure far more than the age on the case. A five-year-old machine with a good graphics card can be worth several times a newer one without.

Desktops and all-in-ones

Office towers, small form factor machines, all-in-ones and home builds. Dell OptiPlex and Precision, HP EliteDesk and ProDesk, Lenovo ThinkCentre, plus anything assembled from parts.

Workstations and gaming rigs

Discrete graphics, Xeon and Threadripper machines, and anything built for rendering or CAD. These often hold value considerably longer than an office tower of the same age.

Servers and rack equipment

Rack and tower servers, plus the rails, caddies and redundant power supplies that go with them. Whole racks are welcome.

Loose parts and components

Graphics cards, processors, memory, drives and power supplies. A box of pulled components is worth asking about rather than binning.

How do I get rid of an old computer?

There are four realistic routes: sell it, give it away, take it to a household waste recycling centre, or leave it in the cupboard for another two years. Selling is the only one that gets you anything back, and it is worth checking before you assume a machine is worthless — an old tower with a decent graphics card in it is frequently worth more than the whole machine looks.

Is my old desktop worth anything?

It depends far more on what is inside it than on how old the case looks. Processor, memory, storage and especially the graphics card are what carry the value. Tell us the model, or open it up and tell us what is in there, and we will come back with a figure.

Do I send it to you, or do you collect?

For desktops it is normally collection rather than post. A tower is heavy and awkward to send, so free postage applies to laptops rather than to machines this size — tell us what you have and where you are, and we will confirm the route and anything it involves before it is arranged. Payment is within three working days of it arriving and being checked, either way.

What about the monitor, keyboard and mouse?

List the monitor separately — flat panels have their own value and are frequently forgotten. Keyboards, mice and cables are worth mentioning but rarely move the figure much on their own.

What happens to the hard drive?

Say on the enquiry that the machine holds data and it is agreed before anything moves. Eligible storage is wiped and a data erasure certificate is issued; anything that cannot be wiped is destroyed rather than passed on. Please do not pull the drive out first — a machine missing its drive is worth less than the same machine with the drive wiped. More on data wiping.
