Faults that are still worth money

People throw away laptops every day that were worth something. These are the four we are sent most often, and none of them make a machine worthless on their own.

It will not turn on

The most common fault we are sent, and often the least serious. A flat battery, a failed charger or a dead power board are all routine, and the rest of the machine is usually untouched.

A broken screen

Cracked, blank, flickering or lifting away from the case. A screen is one of the cheaper parts to replace on most models, so a laptop with a broken screen that is otherwise sound is still worth a sensible figure.

Water damage and board faults

Harder to recover, and sometimes not economic. Even then the memory, drive, screen and casing frequently come out and go back into other machines.

Missing parts, or stripped

Half-disassembled, no keyboard, no drive, a bag of screws taped to the lid. Say what is missing and it is priced on what is actually there.

Is a broken laptop actually worth anything?

Often, yes. Two things drive it: the fault may be cheaper to repair than people assume, and where a repair is not economic the working components still have value. What decides it is the model rather than the damage — a sought-after machine with a bad screen is worth more than a working machine nobody wants.

Do I need to know what is wrong with it?

No. “It stopped charging” or “my daughter dropped it” is enough to start. Tell us what you have noticed and we will ask if we need more — guessing at a diagnosis is our job, not yours.

The screen is smashed and I cannot wipe it. What now?

Say so on the enquiry. A machine that will not display or will not power on cannot be wiped in the normal way, so those are handled differently: eligible storage is erased and anything that cannot be is destroyed rather than passed on. More on data wiping.

Should I take the hard drive out first?

Please do not. A laptop missing its drive is worth less than the same laptop with the drive wiped, and removing it is the single most common way people reduce what they get. If the data is the concern, tell us and it is dealt with.

What does it cost me to find out?

Nothing. The quote is free, postage is free, and there is no obligation to accept the figure. If you do go ahead, payment is within three working days of the laptop arriving and being checked.

What if it turns out to be worth nothing?

Then we will say so plainly rather than quietly leaving it off the quote. Some machines have no resale value and no useful parts left, and knowing that is still a useful answer.
