How much is my laptop worth?

It depends on five things, and the model name is only one of them. Here is what actually decides the figure — then tell us what you have and we will work yours out.

Four things move the number

Worth understanding before you sell anything, wherever you sell it. Most people are wrong about the second one.

Specification, before anything else

Processor, memory and storage set the ceiling. Two identical-looking machines from the same year can differ by a wide margin on specification alone, which is why a model name on its own is rarely enough to price something.

Age, but not the way people expect

Value does not fall in a straight line. Most of the drop happens in the first two or three years, and a good business laptop then holds a modest value for a surprisingly long time. A six-year-old ThinkPad is often worth more than a three-year-old budget machine.

Condition, and which fault it is

Not all faults cost the same. A tired battery or a cracked screen are cheap, well-understood repairs. Water damage, a failed board or a machine that has been apart are a different matter, and the difference is much larger than the damage looks.

Demand for that exact model

The one nobody predicts. A machine with a discrete graphics card or a well-supported business chassis has buyers waiting; a discontinued consumer line with no parts supply does not, however well it works.

Why is there no instant price on this page?

Because it would be a guess, and you would find out it was a guess when the laptop arrived. A number generated from a dropdown before anybody has seen the machine is either padded to look attractive or hedged so low it is useless — and either way it changes on arrival, which is the moment it does the most damage. We would rather ask a few more questions and give you a figure we can stand behind.

How accurate will the figure be?

As accurate as what you tell us. Make, model, age, specification and an honest description of the faults will usually get you close. It remains subject to a check against what actually arrives, and if the laptop is materially different from the description we come back to you before anything changes.

What if I do not know the specification?

Send what you have. On Windows, Settings → System → About lists the processor and memory; on a Mac it is under About This Mac. If that is a step too far, the model name and a photograph of the label underneath is usually enough for us to work it out.

Is it worth checking if the laptop is broken?

Yes, and this is where people most often assume wrongly. A machine that will not start frequently has nothing worse than a flat battery or a failed charger, and where a repair is not economic the components usually still have value. Selling a broken laptop.

No. The valuation is free, there is no obligation to accept it, and if you do go ahead postage is free and payment is within three working days of the laptop arriving and being checked.
